Why hot tub volume is tricky
An acrylic spa’s shell is mostly seats, foot well, jets and plumbing, wrapped in a cabinet. Length × width × height of the box badly overstates the water. Jacuzzi’s J-335, for example, measures 84 × 84 × 36 inches outside and holds 358 gallons: about 33% of its outer box. We use that share as the default for acrylic spas.
Inflatable, wooden, stock-tank and tiled tubs are simpler. Measure the inside and the water depth, then take off a little for any bench.
The formula
Acrylic spa: gallons ≈ length × width × cabinet height (in) ÷ 231 × 33%
Inside measurements: gallons = footprint area × water depth ÷ 231 × (1 − seats share)
231 cubic inches make one US gallon. Footprint area is length × width for square tubs, 0.785 × diameter² for round tubs, and 0.828 × width across the flat sides² for octagons.Worked examples
An acrylic spa, 84 × 84 × 36 inches outside
- Box = 84 × 84 × 36 ÷ 231 = 1,100 gallons
- Water ≈ 1,100 × 33% = 363 gallons, close to the 358 gallons Jacuzzi lists for this size
A round inflatable, 70 inches inside, 24 inches of water
- Footprint = 0.785 × 70² = 3,848 in²
- Water = 3,848 × 24 ÷ 231 = 400 gallons
A 6 ft round wooden tub, 36 inches of water, bench takes 12%
- Water = 0.785 × 72² × 36 ÷ 231 × 0.88 = 558 gallons
Typical acrylic spa sizes
| Outside size (inches) | Estimated water |
|---|---|
| 72 × 72 × 32 | about 240 gal |
| 78 × 78 × 34 | about 300 gal |
| 84 × 84 × 36 | about 360 gal |
| 90 × 90 × 36 | about 420 gal |
| 92 × 92 × 38 | about 460 gal |
Estimated water in a typical acrylic spa, by outside size
Seat layouts vary. Lounger seats and deep foot wells hold less water than open designs, so if your spa’s manual or spec sheet lists a capacity, use that.
Measure it exactly
The most accurate way is to read the water meter when you refill after a drain. You can also time the fill: hold a bucket of known size under the hose to get gallons per minute, then multiply by the minutes it takes to fill the tub. Once you know the volume, the hot tub chemical calculator gives doses that fit it.
Frequently asked questions
How many gallons does a hot tub hold?
Most acrylic hot tubs hold between about 250 and 500 gallons. Two-person and inflatable tubs are often under 250; large family spas can reach 500 or more.
How many gallons is a 7 × 7 hot tub?
About 363 gallons for an acrylic spa 84 inches square and 36 inches tall. Jacuzzi lists its 84 × 84 × 36 inch J-335 at 358 gallons.
How do I find my hot tub’s exact volume?
Check the owner’s manual or spec sheet first. Otherwise read the water meter before and after a refill, or time the fill with a known flow rate.
Why does volume matter for chemicals?
Doses are a concentration times the volume. In a few hundred gallons, an error of 100 gallons changes the dose by a quarter or more, which shows up fast in a small body of water.
How many litres is a hot tub?
Typical acrylic spas hold roughly 950 to 1,900 litres. Switch the calculator to metric to enter measurements in centimetres.
Does the water level matter?
Yes. Most tubs are filled to just above the highest jets or to a fill line on the skimmer. A couple of inches lower can mean 20 to 30 fewer gallons in a large spa.
